James Wan Says ‘Aquaman 2’ Will Be Released In Theaters
James Wan has confirmed that the current plan at Warner Bros is for Aquaman 2 to have a theatrical release.
Back in 2018, audiences and critics were shocked at just how good Aquaman turned out to be. While the film garnered mixed to positive reviews, the film earned over $1B at the worldwide box office, beating out other films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. A sequel was quickly put into development but recent events have put its theatrical release into question.
Last year Warner Bros. and AT&T shocked the world when they announced that all of their films being released in 2021 would also be released on HBO Max at the same time. The move had its fair share of critics and even veteran DC producer Charles Roven had issues with the decision. James Wan, however, seems to think that this will not affect projects like Aquaman 2.
While speaking to The Los Angeles Times, James Wan seemed to confirm that everyone was on the same page about films like Aquaman 2 and that it would be released exclusively to theaters:
“This movie has to be played on the biggest screen around the world, and the studio gets that as well.”
Do you think Warner Bros will stop releasing films on HBO Max and theaters at the same time? Do you think Aquaman 2 should release exclusively to theaters? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Here is the synopsis for the first film:
From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be… a king.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry.
Aquaman is available on Digital HD, 4K UHD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD, with the sequel currently scheduled for December 16, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Aquaman 2 and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
