How far will a mother go to give her child the best opportunities in life? That question seems to be answered in the trailer for “Confetti” from writer-director Ann Hu, who has based the story on her own experiences.
The spot sees Lan (Zhu Zhu) move with her nine-year-old daughter, Meimei (newcomer Harmonie He), from their small town in China to New York City. They’re relocating to provide the best education possible for Meimei, who has dyslexia. Previously misunderstood and neglected by educators unprepared to accommodate her, Meimei is soon presented with greater opportunities in their new home city. Helen (Amy Irving), who takes in the mother and daughter, arranges a meeting for them with “a school for kids like Meimei who are left behind by the system, [a school for] smart kids who learn differently.”
The trailer also hints at the challenges Lan faces in understanding her daughter’s dyslexia, and in her new status as an immigrant.
Hu’s directorial debut, “Shadow Magic,” won the Chinese Academy Award as well as the Presidential Award in China for Best Film. She also directed “Beauty Remains.”
Zhu Zhu’s previous credits include “Cloud Atlas” and TV series “Marco Polo.”
“Confetti” will be available to watch in theaters August 20.
