The Ring Birth Control As A Type Of Contraception

Introduction

Vaginal contraceptive rings are made up of soft plastic and contain two hormones named estrogen and progesterone. These hormones, also naturally present in the human body, are the main ingredients used in the pill. These rings, however, do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) but are effective for those Women who hesitate to use other contraceptive methods or forget to consume an oral pill.

How does it prevent pregnancy?

The two hormones present in the ring combine to prevent ovulation. Ovulation is a process during which the ovaries release an egg during a women’s monthly cycle.  The hormones present in the vaginal ring thicken the mucus on your cervix, which helps block the sperm from entering the egg and affect the lining of the uterus to make it difficult for the egg to attach.

How to use it?

It is similar to putting on a tampon and is monthly based. The woman has to place it into her vagina during her period days- starting from first till fourth. It is important to note that the ring should be placed inside the vagina for three weeks in a row. She must remove the device on the same day of the week at the same time, it was placed 3 weeks prior. Following this, the women should expect to menstruate within a few days. After a week, whether she is on her period or not,  a new ring is to be placed into the vagina, once again.

It takes a while for the hormones present in the ring to become effective. Meanwhile, intimate couples can use other forms of contraception for seven days. Using a condom is advisable. Women are allowed to change the position of the ring; by placing it in any position they feel comfortable in,  pushing it back, or taking it out.

The vaginal muscles provide support to the ring and prevent it from falling out. However, if it falls, you can place it back within 3 hours, after rinsing it with cold water. If you have sex during the period, the ring has fallen out; there are high chances of pregnancy. How many types of rings exist?
