Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie taps Love and Monsters writer

Although we have no shortage of Star Wars TV shows to fill the next two years, the big-screen has been absent of tales from that galaxy far, far away since the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The first new Star Wars film to hit theaters will be Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie, and THR has reported that the project has snagged itself a writer.

The outlet reports that Matthew Robinson, who co-wrote Love and Monsters with Brian Duffield, has signed on to pen the script for Rogue Squadron. Patty Jenkins will be taking the helm of Rogue Squadron as it introduce audiences to “a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.” Jenkins has said that she’s using her fighter pilot father as an inspiration and wants to make the “greatest fighter pilot movie ever made.” In addition to Love and Monsters, Robinson also co-wrote and co-directed The Invention of Lying alongside Ricky Gervais, as well as had a hand in writing Monster Trucks and Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Robinson was also tapped to pen the script for the much anticipated Edge of Tomorrow sequel.

Production on Rogue Squadron is expected to kick off in 2022 and the film is already slated a December 22, 2023 release.
