Drew Struzan Pays Homage To Richard Donner With A Superman Portrait

Iconic artist Drew Struzan paid homage to the late Richard Donner by sharing a portrait of Christopher Reeves as Superman.

Director Richard Donner, 91, passed away yesterday. Best known for directing Superman: The Movie, The Omen, and the Lethal Weapon franchise, many pundits have heralded Donner as one of the leading filmmakers who carved out the blockbuster in Hollywood. An influence through millions around the world, whether through his films or his personality, Donner has seen dozens upon dozens of tributes pouring in since his death was announced. Now, artist Drew Struzan has paid homage to the director by sharing a portrait of one of his most inspired casting choices: Christopher Reeves as Superman.

Drew Struzan is, perhaps, the leading artist when it comes to iconic movie posters from the last century. Struzan has created posters for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, and two Richard Donner films: The Goonies and Ladyhawke. While he never got his hands on the posters for Superman: The Movie, Struzan shared an illustration of Christopher Reeves striking the iconic Superman pose. The artist also looked back on the two posters he created for Donner.

Directed by Richard Donner, the 1978 film stars Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Ned Beatty, Jackie Cooper, Glenn Ford, Valerie Perrine, Terence Stamp, Phyllis Thaxter, Susannah York, Jeff East, and Marc McClure.

Here is the synopsis for Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie:

Academy Award-winners Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman head an all-star cast in the fantastic, action-packed film that made Christopher Reeve an international star playing the greatest superhero of all time. From the doomed planet of Krypton, two parents launch a spaceship carrying their infant son to earth. Here he grows up to become Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for the Metropolis Daily Planet. But with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, he battles for truth and justice as Superman.
