‘Black Widow’ Director Thinks Sequel Could Follow Different Character

Are we about to get a new Black Widow?

Black Widow director Cate Shortland shared that a sequel without Scarlett Johansson could be on the table.

Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff notably died in Avengers: Endgame, but that didn’t stop Marvel Studios from giving her a solo film in the form of a prequel. Kevin Feige has teased that more prequels might be on the way from Marvel Studios, and in an interview with Radio Times, Black Widow director Cate Shortland addressed the possibility of a sequel to her film:

“I think following a different character, yes.”

Marvel Studios has already passed on the mantle of several Avengers, and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova seems to be primed as the next Black Widow, especially since she’s set to appear in Hawkeye next. Shortland went onto say that it was ultimately Scarlett Johansson’s decision to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the solo film:

“I think Scarlett is really happy that she’s leaving the party, you know, and she’s not the last to leave. She decided she wanted to go. And I don’t think she would want to come back at the moment.”

Do you think we will get a sequel? Are you cool with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova taking on the mantle? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below!

Here is the synopsis for Black Widow:

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Directed by Cate Shortland from a script written by Eric Pearson based on a story by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson, the Marvel film stars Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, Ray Winstone, Olivier Richters, and Rachel Weisz.

The film hits theaters and Disney Plus on July 9th. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Black Widow, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
