The Tomorrow War was watched by 2.4M U.S. households, according to Samba TV
Streaming services are notorious for not officially releasing viewership figures for their shows or movies but we do get some indication of how a project did on various platforms thanks to Samba TV. The third-party streaming analytics corps has provided some figures for Chris Pratt’s THE TOMORROW WAR and it looks like the film performed pretty well over the 4-day holiday weekend.
According to Samba TV, The Tomorrow War was watched by 2.41 million U.S. households during the 4-day holiday weekend. This means that, at least based on the Samba TV numbers, The Tomorrow War performed better than other Amazon releases in its first few days such as Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse (2.3 million U.S. households) and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (1.6 million U.S. households). Amazon previously reported that Coming 2 America was their biggest weekend premiere ever but they didn’t release any figures and Samba TV didn’t measure the film’s first weekend. It should also be noted that The Tomorrow War bested the viewership of HBO Max’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League which pulled in 1.8 million U.S. households in its first four days and one could argue that film had a bit more promotion.
The Tomorrow War was a very expensive acquisition for Amazon at $200 million so whatever the full figures are, they needed to be pretty sizeable for the acquisition to make sense. The film launched in 240 countries and territories on Prime Video on July 2 and, according to Screen Engine’s PostVOD audience summary, the movie placed No.1 over the 4th of July weekend over 3 and four days. According to Amazon’s press release about The Tomorrow War, “In addition to the #ranking across streaming platforms in the U.S., Prime Video saw worldwide record-setting viewership in Brazil, India, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Australia, Mexico, Argentina, and Japan.”
Samba TV measures streaming viewership in 3 million U.S. terrestrial Smart TV households for those who tuned into the film for at least five minutes. Samba TV found that the audience for The Tomorrow War leaned middle class ($75k-100k incomes) and the film over-indexed in Portland the most (+50%).
Per the film’s official synopsis, “In The Tomorrow War, the world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrive from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: Thirty years in the future mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high school teacher and family man Dan Forester (Chris Pratt). Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father (J.K. Simmons) in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.” Directed by Chris McKay, in his live-action directorial debut, the film also stars Betty Gilpin, Keith Powers, Mike Mitchell, and Sam Richardson.
