RLJE Films has debuted an official trailer for its serial killer drama No Man of God. Based on true events, the film stars Elijah Wood as FBI agent Bill Hagmaier, who serial killer Ted Bundy confessed his crimes to while on Death Row. The trailer for the film depicts Bundy (Luke Kirby) forming a strong bond with his interviewer, Hagmaier, who before long appears to fall for the killer’s charisma and twisted view of the world. Bundy confessed to 30 homicides when he was alive, committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978. He was known for being a smooth talker and someone who exploited other people’s weaknesses for his own gain and entertainment.

Directed by Amber Sealey and produced by SpectreVision, the production company Wood established in 2010 with Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller. Recently while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wood explained why Hagmaier and Bundy’s relationship was worth exploring, saying, “As it pertains to things that we do with our company, I’m never reading material thinking of myself as an actor,” says Wood. “I’m only ever thinking as a producer. It was a significant way through the process that I was like, I actually do want to do this. I love Bill and I love his journey in this relationship. The film is really comprised of a series of conversations lifted in part from real conversations and then recollections from Bill of these conversations.”

According to Sealey, the real Bill Hagmaier was an open book during the making of the film. “I became quite good friends with him,” Sealey explained to EW. “He was wonderful and so available. I would call him and ask, ‘What did this feel like?’ I could ask him about the emotional stuff, the family stuff, and then all the way down to, ‘What color belts would you wear?'”

Per RLJE Films, here is the official synopsis for No Man of God:

In 1980, Ted Bundy was sentenced to death by electrocution. In the years that followed, he agreed to disclose the details of his crimes, but only to one man. NO MAN OF GOD is based on the true story of the strange and complicated relationship that developed between FBI agent Bill Hagmaier and an incarcerated Ted Bundy in the years leading to Bundy’s execution.

No Man of God will arrive in theaters, On Demand, and Digital on August 27, 2021.
