“Made For Love” Renewed for Second Season at HBO Max

Hazel Green’s fight for freedom continues. HBO Max has renewed “Made For Love” for a second season. A press release announced the news and revealed that the critically acclaimed dark comedy ranks among the streamer’s top original half-hours since launching.

Based on Alissa Nutting’s novel of the same name, “Made For Love” sees “Palm Springs” star Cristin Milioti playing Hazel, a 30-something woman desperate to escape her unhappy marriage. The only problem is that her tech billionaire husband (Billy Magnussen, “Aladdin”) of 10 years has implanted a chip into Hazel’s brain that merges their thoughts, and when she decides to leave him, he’s able to track her every move.

Stephanie Laing (“Dollface”) and Alethea Jones (“Dispatches from Elsewhere”) directed the first season of the series, which consisted of eight episodes.

Christina Lee will be reprising her showrunner duties in Season 2. She’ll be joined by Nutting this time around.

“‘Made For Love’ is funny, dark, and entirely unique,” said Suzanna Makkos, EVP, Original Comedy and Adult Animation, HBO Max. “We are thrilled to be reuniting with this dream team of talented producers, incredible cast, and CGI dolphins to tell the next chapter of this exciting story.”

Lee and Nutting added, “We’re thrilled we get the chance to work with our incredible cast and crew again.”

Asked what she hopes audiences get out of “Made For Love,” Lee told The AV Club, “I hope that they see this is a sci-fi show that we approached through a female lens.” She emphasized that the show’s all-women directing roster was intentional, and said that she and others “talked about the sci-fi genre, content we love, but what’s missing from it and how this one can be different.”
