Gina Prince-Bythewood to Direct Sci-Fi “Exoplanet”
Gina Prince-Bythewood has yet another project in the works. In the wake of her latest pic, “The Old Guard’s,” smash success, the writer and director has signed on to a slew of projects, including a limited series about Mamie Till Mobley, Viola Davis-led African warrior pic “The Woman King,” and an adaptation of the bestselling novel “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat.” Now word comes that she’s been tapped to direct “Exoplanet.” MGM scored feature rights to Minnie Schedeen’s short story in a “competitive situation” with Schedeen on board to pen the adaptation, Deadline reports.
Details about the project are being kept under wraps, but “Exoplanet” is reportedly an “elevated sci-fi thriller.”
As NASA explains, “The worlds orbiting other stars are called ‘exoplanets,’ and they come in a wide variety of sizes, from gas giants larger than Jupiter to small, rocky planets about as big around as Earth or Mars.”
“I am so thrilled to be reuniting again with Gina Prince-Bythewood. The opportunity to work with her on ‘Love and Basketball’ was an incredible experience and to have a chance to work with her again is hugely exciting,” said Michael De Luca, MGM’s Film Group chairman.
Based on the comic book series of the same name, “The Old Guard” dropped on Netflix last summer and ranks as the streamer’s sixth most-watched movie. Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne topline the action pic about a covert group of mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die. “Beyond the Lights,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” and “Love & Basketball” are among Prince-Bythewood’s other credits.
