The Film That Lit My Fuse is a Deadline video series that aims to provide an antidote to headlines about industry uncertainty by swinging the conversation back to the creative ambitions, formative influences and inspirations of some of today’s great screen artists.
Every installment asks the same five questions. Today’s subject is the acclaimed British director Edgar Wright. His first feature was Western spoof A Fistful of Fingers before he moved into TV, forging a relationship with co-collaborator Simon Pegg that ultimately led to Shaun of the Dead.
Wright has not looked back since, completing his Cornetto trilogy with Hot Fuzz and The World’s End. His other memorable features include Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Baby Driver. Wright has just released The Sparks Brothers, a documentary that profiles influential band Sparks, while he is also preparing to drop Last Night in Soho later this year.

In The Film That Lit My Fuse, Wright talks at length about how Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise inspired his move into moviemaking. He was introduced to Raimi through Channel 4’s The Incredibly Strange Film Show, which profiled the filmmaker in an episode that completely entranced Wright. You can watch the show here.
Wright also reveals why Trainspotting humbled him and how George A. Romero helped him feel accepted in the business after the zombie specialist was treated to a private screening of Shaun of the Dead.
